A study on the toxicity of a range of concentrations of methyl acrylate towards soil micro-flora was conducted according to OECD TG 217. The EC50 for soil micro-flora based on effects on carbon cycle was determined to be greater than 1000 mg/kg dry mass soil.

Since methyl acrylate is readily biodegradable and no direct releases to soil from point sources are known, no significant exposure of the terrestrial compartment is expected. At production sites acrylates are handled in closed systems for polymerisation. Diffuse releases into the environment may occur from residual monomers in the polymeric products. No further testing in the terrestrial compartment is required based on such low exposure levels. This is also in accordance with Table R.7.11—2 of Chapter R.7c of ECHA’s guidance (version 3.0 ; June 2017) since methyl acrylate can be assigned to the Soil Hazard Category 1.
