Description of key information

Waiving of study:
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, short-term toxicity to invertebrates-arthropodes (required in section 9.4.1) does not need to be conducted as direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely. The substance has no high potential to adsorb to soil and is not very persistent.
The following aspects need to be considered:
- Benzyldimethylamine is not ready biodegradable in water, but tests with adapted microorganisms show a clear and rapid degradation. In addition the test substance was shown to be inherently biodegradable in a Zahn-Wellens test.
- From its physical/chemical properties (log Koc calculated to be 2.457, log Kow = 1.98 and high water solubility of 12.0 g/L) no bioaccumulation and persistence in the environment is expected.
In conclusion, further tests on soil macroorganisms (arthropodes) are not required and will not provide additional and meaningful data for the hazard assessment of benzyldimethylamine.
