Description of key information

Waiving of study:
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the test on long-term toxicity to fish (required in section 9.1.6) does not need to be conducted as the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates no need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms.
The following aspects need to be considered:
- A long-term daphnia reproduction test is available. This test is sufficient to evaluate the long-term environmental risks.
- Benzyldimethylamine is not ready biodegradable in water, but tests with adapted microorganisms show a clear and rapid degradation. In addition the test substance was shown to be inherently biodegradable in a Zahn-Wellens test.
- From its physical/chemical properties (log Koc calculated to be 2.457, log Kow = 1.98 and high water solubility of 12.0 g/L) no bioaccumulation and persistence in the environment is expected.
In conclusion, a test on long-term toxicity to fish is not required and will not provide additional and meaningful data for the hazard assessment of benzyldimethylamine.
