Description of key information

Using the PNECsoil value that was calculated by the equilibrium partitioning method, the risk characterization shows that the PEC/PNECsediment ratio for the aquatic environment is <1, indicating testing of effects on soil microorganisms can be waived for methacrylic acid, monoester with propane-1,2-diol.

The substance (methacrylic acid, monoester with propane-1,2-diol) has a log Pow value that is less than 3 (log Pow = 0.97), has a low potential for adsorption or binding to organic matter (no dissociable group; estimated Koc of 33.5) and is readily biodegradable. The distribution modeling (Mackay level III fugacity modeling) indicates that when methacrylic acid, monoester with propane-1,2-diol is released to air, water and soil in equal amounts, the substance will partition to soil and water predominantly, and to air to some small degree. Methacrylic acid, monoester with propane-1,2-diol will not partition to sediment following release to the water compartment.  If released to soil, most of the substance will remain in soil with a portion transported to water. In both the aquatic and soil compartments it is anticipated that methacrylic acid, monoester with propane-1,2-diol will biodegrade rapidly and thus persistence in the aquatic and soil compartments is not anticipated. The predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) for soil was derived from the PNEC for freshwater using the equilibrium partitioning method. Using the PNECsoil value that was calculated using the equilibrium partitioning method, the risk characterization shows that the PEC/PNECsoil ratio for the terrestrial environment is <1, indicating testing of effects on soil microorganisms can be waived for methacrylic acid, monoester with propane-1,2-diol.
