Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive

European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC of 20 December 1994 on packaging and packaging waste

Scope

This Directive aims to harmonise national measures concerning the management of packaging and packaging waste, and also to prevent any impact on the environment. (Art. 1(1)) This Directive covers all packaging placed on the market in the Community and all packaging waste, whether it is used or released at industrial, commercial, office, shop, service, household or any other level, regardless of the material used. (Art. 2 (1))

Marking and identification > to facilitate collection, reuse and recovery including recycling, packaging shall indicate the nature of the packaging material (s) used. (Art.8 (2)) Packaging shall bear the appropriate marking either on the packaging itself or on the label. (Art. 8(3))
