Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Based on structural considerations, furfural has no intrinsic properties of explosiveness.

Furfural can cause exothermic and explosive reactions in contact with strong acids
or alkaline substances. At elevated temperatures, a risk for fire exists.
According to CLP guidelines, classification as flammable is applicable. Depending on
the temperature, the risk for fire may change into a risk for explosion at more
elevated temperatures (Williams, D.L. and Dunlop, A.P., Kinetics of Furfural
Destruction in Acidic Aqueous Media, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, 1948,
Vol. 40 No. 2 p. 239-241).
