Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Inhalation:
Place the victim in a clean and safe atmosphere. If there are breathing difficulties, give oxygen under medical supervision. In the event of respiratory failure, carry out artificial ventilation. Call a doctor.
Eyes:
Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15minutes. Systematically seek medical advice.
Skin:
Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Dab liquid from skin using dry cotton or paper toweling. Flood area with plenty of the coldest water available. Consult a doctor if exposure symptoms develop.
Ingestion:
Do NOT induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth. In case of swallowing, if the quantity is small (no more than one mouthful), rinse the mouth with water, administer activated charcoal for medical use and consult a doctor. Immediately call a physician and show him the label. In case of accidental ingestion, do not drink, do not induce vomiting and transfer to hospital immediately by ambulance. Show the label to the physician.
Fire-fighting measures
No fire hazard.
Extinguishing Media:
In case of fire, use media suitable :
- carbon dioxid (CO2)
- powders
Not to be used:
Do not use water.
Special exposure hazards:
A fire will often product a thick black smoke. Exposure to decomposition products can cause hazard to health. Do not breath fumes.
In case of fire, decomposition products could be vanadium pentoxide (V205) and hydrochloric acid (HCl).
Special protective equipment for fire fighters:
Impermeable acid-resistant clothing. Positive-pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus.
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions:
Evacuate any non-essential personnel. Protect intervention teams must wear impermeable acid-resistant clothing, including a positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus.
Environmental precautions:
Contain and collect spillage with non-combustible absorbent materials (e.g. sand, earth). Prevent entry into sewers or waterways.
Prevent water and moisture contact. Product fumes in air from reaction with atmospheric moisture. Fumes are a mixture of vanadium pentoxide and hydrochloric acid.
Alert relevant authorities in accordance with statutory procedures.
Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:
If the ground is contaminated, and after product recovery by sponging with inert and non-combustible absorbent material, wash surface contaminated with plenty water.
Clean preferably with a detergent, avoid the use of solvents.
Handling and storage
Handling:
Wash hands after each use.
Remove and wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas.
Provide safety showers and eye washes in workshops where the substance is handled.
Do not allow contact with moisture.
Do not smoke, eat or drink in the premises where the substance is used.
Do not open the packages under pressure.
Storage:
Keep container tightly closed in a dry place.
Keep away from food or drink.
Always keep in containers with same material as the original one.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Recommendations on equipment designs:
Ensure sufficient ventilation of the workplace.
Use design and operational practices which exclude atmosphere and moisture contact.
Personnal Safety Equipment:
Use personal protective equipment properly maintained.
Store the personal protective equipment in a clean area, clear of the workplace.
Eye protection:
Avoid contact with eyes.
It is necessary to wear side shields safety glasses complying with EN166.
In case of increased danger, use a face shield to protect the face.
Provide eye washes in workshops.
Do not wear contact lenses.
Skin protection:
Use suitable protective gloves resistant to chemical agents complying with EN374.
The glove selection must depend of the application and duration of use at workplace.
Wear suitable protective clothes.
Remove and wash contaminated clothes before reuse.
In case of heavy projections, wear protective clothing complying with EN14605 to avoid skin contact.
In case of risk of splashing, wear protective clothing complying with EN14605 to avoid skin contact.
Stability and reactivity
Reactivity:
Product reacts violently with water.
Avoid contact with air and water in any form.
Stability:
Stable under recommended handling and storage.
Incompatible materials:
- water
- alkali metals
- Strong oxidizing agents
Hazardous decomposition:
Decomposition products could be hydrochloric acid (HCl) and vanadium pentoxide (V205) a reprotoxic substance
Disposal considerations
Do not discharge into sewers or rivers.
Recycle or dispose of in accordance with current legislation, preferably via a certified company.
