Description of key information

Terrestrial macroorganisms:

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) from the Dutch government agency published in 2005 a report “Environmental Risk Limits for Nine Trace Elements” (P.L.A. van Vlaardingen, R. Posthumus and C.J.A.M. Posthuma-Doodeman) in which data for vanadium element are referenced.

A study on Eisenia fetidawas realized during 14 days and gave an EC50 at 366 mg/kg soil dw for mortality, showing a low effect level for vanadium toxicity.

Microorganisms:

Two reliable data are available and showed a CE10 at 1,6 mg/kg for respiration inhibition with silt loam type soils (9 days) and a NOEC at 400 mg/kg soil dw for mineralization inhibition (8 years).

Plants:

Reliable data are available for short term and repeated exposure toxicity to plants. The first one showed a CE50 at 249 mg/kg dw for germination of Lactuca sativa(5 days) and at 569 mg/kg dw for germination of Raphanus sativas(3 days).

A second study gave a LOEC 88h = 50,9 mg/L for the closure of the leaflets of Albizzia julibrissin in an in vitro test.

The two last ones are long term studies giving a NOEC 98 days = 100 mg/kg dw for Brassica oleraceagrowth and EC10 = 25 mg/kg dw for root and shoot growth of soybean.

It is concluded that sufficient reliable data for toxicity to terrestrial macroorganisms, microorganisms and plants are available and showed that microorganisms are the most sensible species. Moreover, the CSA does not authorize the application of sludges on agricultural soil, when on-site incineration is not applied. There is then no reason for vanadium to be retrieved on soil if exposure by air is correctly managed.
