Description of key information

Testing of the surface tesion of chlorine is technically not possible as the substance reacts with water to form sodium hypochlorite. Thus read across to sodium hypochlorite is performed. The surface tension of sodium hypochlorite (24.3 % available chlorine) was determined to be 82.4 mN/m +/-0.8 mN/m (n=3) at 20.2-20.3°C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
82.4
in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
316

Additional information

Read-across to sodium hypochlorite (24.3 % available chlorine):

The mean surface tension of the test item pure in demineralized water was: 82.4 +/- 0.8 mN/m (corrected value) determined with the ring method. The test item was not considered as surface-active under the experimental conditions used in this test.
