Description of key information

The oxidising properties of charcoal were determined in accordance with EC directive 440/2008, method A.17 "oxidizing properties (solids)", dated 31. May 2008 under the GLP compliance.

The determination of oxidising properties of charcoal was performed according to EU-method A.17. Therefore, three charcoal probes with different C content were chosen (Probe 1: C-Fix = 73.3%, Probe 2: C-Fix = 80.5% and Probe 3: C-Fix = 88.7%). For test item preparation, the charcoal probes were ground and sieved. The fraction <125 µm was used for the tests. The test items and a defined combustible substance, here powdered cellulose (<125 µm particle size), were mixed in various ratios. Each mixture was then formed into a pile and the pile was ignited at one end. The maximum burning rate determined was compared with the maximum burning rate of the reference mixture (barium nitrate with powdered cellulose). All burning rates of the test item charcoal (Probe 1-3) were smaller than the maximum burning rate of the mixture of reference item and cellulose. Based on the test results and under the test conditions used, the test item charcoal is classified as not oxidising.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Under the conditions of the test for oxidising properties according to EU method A.17, all three charcoal probes did not show any oxidising properties.

Accordingly, charcoal is not classified as an oxidising substance as described in the current EU-CLP regulation.
