Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

At present, it is not expected that charcoal becomes systemically available at significant amounts as in the granulometry studies performed with three representative charcoal samples only a minor fraction was inhalable (particle sizes ≤ 100 µm) and more importantly only a negligible fraction was respirable (particle sizes ≤ 2 µm). In addition, there is no evidence for a significant translocation of even smaller carbonaceous particles (35 nm) to the systemic circulation upon inhalation (Wiebert et al. 2006). However, as toxicokinetic data might be decisive for further testing, a pharmacokinetic study according to OECD TG 417 is recommended.
