The four tests which are required under REACh Annexes VII and VIII for this endpoint, short-term toxicity to fish, short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates, toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria, and toxicity to microorganisms were not needed.

As laid down in REACh Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex VIII, 9.1.1-9.1.4, column 2, these tests do not have to be conducted if the test substance is highly insoluble in water.

Charcoal is highly insoluble in water (see IUCLID section 4.8) and unlikely to cross biological membranes due to particle size (see IUCLID section 4.15) and a lof POW of <1.4 (see IUCLID section 4.7). Accordingly, the four above-mentioned studies were not necessary.
