Description of key information

The explosive properties of charcoal were investigated according to EU method A.14 and under GLP compliance. Three different charcoal probes were tested (Probe 1: C-Fix = 73.3%, Probe 2: C-Fix = 80.5%, Probe 3: C-Fix = 88.7%).
The three test items were considered as non-explosive under the conditions applied in the study.

Additional information

The explosive properties of charcoal were investigated according to EU method A.14.

In the test for thermal sensitivity, no explosion was observed.

In the test for mechanical sensitivity (shock), no explosion was observed when using a force of 40 J.

In the test for mechanical sensitivity (friction), no explosion was observed when using a weight of 360 N and a speed of 10 mm in 0.44 seconds.

Accordingly, the test item charcoal (Probe 1: C-Fix = 73.3%, Probe 2: C-Fix = 80.5%, Probe 3: C-Fix = 88.7%) was considered as non-explosive under the conditions applied in this study.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the study results for explosive properties, charcoal is considered as non-explosive and is therefore not classified as explosive according to the current EU-CLP regulation.
