Description of key information

A summary of information available on the biodegradation in water was provided in ECETOC’s JACC Report #53:Cyanides of Hydrogen, Sodium and Potassium, and Acetone Cyanohydrin (CAS No. 74-90-8, 143-33-9, 151-50-8 and 75-86-5), 2007, No. 53: 115-116. This summary includes evidence of cyanide biodegradation by southern bulrush (Scirpus californicus) in a plant marsh filter system; water hyacincth (Eichhornia crassipes) in batch test solutions; basket willow (Salix viminalis); and in 28 species of Chinese flora, including Chinese elder (Sambucus chinensis) showing a removal rate of 8.77 mg CN-/kg/h. Specific information on biodegradation in sediments was not available. Half-life values in water and sediment were not derived.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Information was not sufficient for the determination of cyanide half-life values in water or sediment.
