Description of key information

Summary of information on photolysis from several sources in the literature by the ECETOC Task Force in Volume I of the JACC No. 53 Report (p. 81).

Under normal environmental conditions, photolysis of cyanides is unlikley to occur, although in the presence of a catalyst such as titanium dioxide powder, cyanide can be photolytically oxidised to cyanate (ECETOC, 2007).

A range of degradation rate constant (K-OH) values was reported in Table 8 of the document, based on several literature sources for photo-oxidation only, and for photo-oxidation and oceanic uptake. The range of degradation constant values for photo-oxidation only is 0.002 x 10^12 cm^3/molecule/s to 0.1 x 10^12 cm^3/molecule/s.
