Executive summary:

This study was conducted to analyse the intestinal histochemistry of fishes exposed to CTC.

Adult healthy specimens were collected from water reservoirs of Jodhpur region (India).

Live fishes were dissected and small interstine fixed in neutral chilled formalin for 8 - 12 h. Afterwards, sections were cut and processed for the demonstration of alkaline phosphatase. Similarly, some specimens were administrated 1 ml of CTC mixture in paraffin and their small intestine part was fixed as described above. Sections were cut and processed for localization of phosphatase activity.

Results:

In CTC -fishes, no marked changes in the localization of phosphatase as well as its intensity in villi were observed. Tips of villi were highly suscetible to the toxicity induced by CTC resulting in the rupture and progressive erosion of brush borders extending inwards. Intestinal glands remained unaffected.
