Additional information

Skin irritation / corrosion

In a primary skin irritation study (BASF AG, 1976), Vienna White rabbits were dermally exposed to approximately 1 mL of undiluted Haerter 527, i.e. Morpholinium toluene-4-sulphonate, for 1 min, 5 min, 15 min, and 20 hours (key information, irritation scored after 24 hours). Animals then were observed for 8 days. After 20 -hour exposure, the mean erythema score was 2 in 2/2 rabbits. Findings were fully reversibe within the observation period. The mean edema score was also 2 in 2/2 rabbits. Edema were also fully reversible within 8 days. No or no clear findings were noted following short-tem exposure. Under the conditions of this study, and with special regard to the long exposure duration of 20 hours in association with the use of occlusive dressings, the test item was considered to be no skin irritant.

Eye irritation

In a primary eye irritation study (BASF AG, 1976), 50 µL of undiluted Haerter 527 flüssig, i.e. Morpholinium toluene-4-sulphonate, was instilled into the conjunctival sac of each one eye of 2 Vienna White rabbits. Substance was not washed out. Irritation was scored by the method of Draize at 24 hours and 8 days. Slight conjunctival redness was noted after 24 h in one of the two animals. Redness was reversible within 8 days. Under the conditions of this study, the test item was no eye irritant.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data, Morpholinium toluene-4-sulphonate is not subject to classification for skin/eye irritation according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (GHS/CLP).
