Justification:

P: The substance is not considered to be persistent


B: The Log octanol-water partition coefficient of the substance is -0.3 at 25.6 °C and pH 6 using the slow-stirring method (OECD 123). A BCF is calculated of 3.162 L/kg ww for the alkyl-dipropylene triamines and tripropylene tetramines assuming no metabolism. In vitro biotransformation by rainbow trout hepatic subcellulair fraction has been observed for primary alkyl amines and alkyl propane-1,3 -diamines. It is therefore likely that also alkyl dipropylene triamines and alkyl tripropylene tetramines are biotransformed. The calculated BCF indicates a low bioaccumulation potential.


T: The most sensitive species is daphnia magnafor which an EC10 of 712 µg/L has been derived from a 21 d study for tetramine C16-18 (CAS no 1219458-11-3). The study has been performed in natural surface water with a low DOC and suspended matter content. To compensate for possible mitigation by the surface water constituents the EC10 is divided by a factor of 10. As a worst-case it is thus assumed that 90% of the test substance was sorbed. Based on the Kpsusp of 100000 L/kg and a concentration of 15 mg/L suspended matter in surface waters, an adsorbed fraction of 43% is calculated


Based on the available ecotoxicity data it is concluded that the T criterion is not fulfilled for the tetramine C16-18, C18 unsaturated however based on the classification R48 the substance is to be classified as toxic.  

Likely routes of exposure:

The substance has a low vapour pressure, low water solubility and is cationic under environmental conditions and due to that sorbs strongly to soil, sediment and sludge.
