Flash point: - 3 °CLower explosion limit: 1.6 %(v/v), 1.6 %(v/v), 1.6 %(v/v)Upper explosion limit: 10.4 %(v/v), 10.4 %(v/v)No pyrophoricity.No flammability on contact with water.
The key parameter for the flammability of a liquid is the flash point,
which is discussed in IUCLID chapter 4.11.
A number of published values are available for the upper and lower
explosion limits of 1,2 -dimethoxyethane. Each source is reporting
consistently the same flammability range from 1.6 %(v/v) to 10.4 %(v/v).
This information combined with the data on flash point and boiling point
leads to the conclusion for the key parameter.
Considering the structure formula and experience in handling and use it
can be stated that pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water
is not a concern for the substance.
According to regulation 67/548/EEC the substance meets the criteria for
classification as highly flammable.
Criteria for classification as "highly flammable": Liquid substance with
a flash point below 21 °C, but not meeting the criteria for "extremely
Criteria for classification as "extremely flammable": liquid substance
with a flash point below 0 °C and a boiling point of max. 35 °C.
As the boiling point is 83 °C the criterion for classification as
"extremely flammable" is not met.
