Results of hydrolysis testing (IUCLID5 section 5.1.2) show that when the substance is released into water it is rapidly degraded within minutes and hydrolysed to the corresponding dicarboxylic acid. A test of ready biodegradability of 4-MHHPA indicates that the substance (as the hydrolysed degradation product) was not readily biodegradable. However, modelling of possible biodegradation pathways indicate that aerobic degradation is likely, intermediate degradation products being predicted which have been shown to be readily biodegradable. In addition, direct or indirect exposure of the aquatic and terrestrial compartments for this substance are unlikely and simulation tests in water, sediment and soil (IUCLID5 sections 5.2.2 and 5.2.3) are therefore waived.
