Description of key information

Additional information

In this dossier, the endpoint exposure related observations in humans are not addressed by substance-specific information, but instead by a weight of evidence approach based on collected information for all iron substances of the iron category. The assessment of the effects in humans of iron and its substances is related to the assumption that once inorganic iron compounds or iron metal become bioavailable, this will be in the form of the ionic iron cation. Further assuming that the anion of such inorganic iron compounds can be regarded as “inert” with regard to repeated dose toxicity, the subsequent discussion focuses on the iron cation. Further information on the read-across approach is given in the report attached to IUCLID section 13.2.
