A survey of major rivers, Chesapeake and San
Francisco Bays and Lakes Huron, Michigan, Ontario
and Superior-23 sites in all-indicated that
only 7% of the water samples analyzed contained
low levels of DOA. The DOA concentration
in these positive samples ranged from 0.25 to
1.0 ug/L and averaged 0.46 ug/L. Assigning a
concentration of 0.1 ug/L (that is, one-half the
detection limit) to those samples in which DOA
was not detected allowed the calculation of the
geometric mean concentration of 0.11 ug/L as the
average DOA concentration in the surface waters
tested.
