Description of key information

NOEC (21 d) = 1 mg/L on Daphnia magna (guideline proposal of the German Umweltbundesamt, 1984)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Long-term tests to aquatic invertebrates are only available for p-cresol. No data is available on o-cresol and m-cresol. Since there is no significant exposure of cresols to the aquatic compartment (refer to exposure assessment in CSR) long-term testing of o-cresol and m-cresol to aquatic invertebrates can be omitted (section 3 of REACH Annex XI).

The long-term toxicity of p-cresol to aquatic invertebrates was determined by a test according to the preliminary guideline proposal of the German Umweltbundesamt from1984. The 21d-NOEC was 1 mg/L for Daphnia magna (Kuehn et al. 1988, 1989). In a non-guideline study with 4 generations on the planarian Dugesia tigrina an 80-d EC10 of 2 mg/L was measured (Solki and Piontek 1987).
