In studies on the adsorption behaviour of cresols to organic soil matter Koc values between 22 and 56 were found. These low values suggest a low adsorption potential of cresols to soil organic matter, thus cresols are expected to predominate in ground water.

In studies on the distribution of cresols between aqueous solution and air Henry’s law constants ranging between 0.087 Pa m³/mol and 0.15 Pa m³/mole were found. These values indicate a low volatility of the cresols from the water phase.

Based on these findings the main target compartment of o-, m-, and p-cresol in the environment is expected to be water.
