Description of key information

LC50 was estimated to >0.28 and <0.73 mg/l. NOEC was estimated to be 0.28 mg/l.
Due to the low water solubility of TS-ED 532, the effect observed was considered to be a physical effect rather than a toxic effect, due to partitioning of TS-ED 532 onto the gills of the fish. The NOEC was several magnitudes higher than the estimated solubility concentration of 2 x E-4 mg/l, and TS-ED 532 was thus considered to be nontoxic within its solubility range. Based on these data, TS-ED 532 is not considered to exhibit acute toxicity to zebra fish under the conditions of this test.

Additional information

The 96-hour acute toxicity of TS-ED 532 to zebra fish (Danio rerio) was examined in accordance with OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals 203, and ISO 7346-1 (Determination of the Acute Lethal Toxicity of Substances to a Freshwater Fish [Brachydanio rerio Hamilton-Buchanan (Teleostei, Cyprinidae)] - Part 2: Semi-static method).

Dose selection was based on a preliminary study with test concentrations; 0, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 mg/l, where 100% mortality was observed at all concentrations. Due to the hydrophobicity of TS-ED 532 (log Kow = 6.42), the measured concentrations were much lower, including 0.28, 0.73 and 4.86 mg/L for the 1, 3, and 10 mg/L doses respectively.

Due to the low water solubility of TS-ED 532, the effect observed was considered to be a physical effect rather than a toxic effect due to partitioning of TS-ED 532 onto the gills of the fish. After 96 hours, 6 of the 10 fish dosed with the measured concentration of 0.28 mg/L were dead and all of the 10 fish in the 0.73 mg/L dose group (measured concentration) were dead. Therefore, the LC50 is >0.28 to <0.73 mg/L and the NOEC is 0.28 mg/L. The NOEC was several magnitudes higher than the estimated solubility concentration of 2 x E-4 mg/l, and TS-ED 532 was thus considered to be nontoxic within its solubility range.

The observed effect of the test substance was considered to be a physical effect rather than a toxic effect caused by partitioning of the test susbtance onto the gills of the fish.
