ASTM D93 (Standard test methods for flash point by pensky-martens closed cup tester)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
closed cup
Flash point apparatus:
Pensky-Martens apparatus
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Purity test date: 20/10/2017

Key result
Flash point:
63 °C
Remarks on result:
other: Atmospheric pressure measurement not provided
Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
2-(2-Methylpropoxy)ethanol was determined to have a flash point of 63 °C. The registered substance does not meet the criteria of a flammable liquid (Category 1 - 3) as it is greater than the cut-off value of 60 °C specified in CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Executive summary:

An experiment was undertaken for 2-(2-methylpropoxy)ethanol to establish flash point temperature and potential flammability. The Pensky-Martens Closed Cup technique was followed according to ASTM D93 (Standard Test Methods for Flash Point by Pensky-Martens Closed Cup Tester) without deviation. The lowest temperature at which vapour from the registered substance ignited, following the presence of a test flame, was determined to be the flash point. Temperature is recorded at the point the flash is first observed. A flash point of 63 °C was obtained for 2-(2-methylpropoxy)ethanol, which is higher than the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 threshold of 60 °C and indicates that the criteria for flammable liquids has not been met. It can be concluded that 2-(2-methylpropoxy)ethanol is not a flammable liquid.

Description of key information

A flash point of 63 °C was obtained for 2-(2-methylpropoxy)ethanol. It can be concluded that the registered substance is not a flammable liquid (Category 1- 3) as it has a flash point value higher than the threshold of 60 °C (CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
63 °C

Additional information

A Klimisch score of 1 (reliable without restriction) was assigned to the endpoint value for flash point given that it was obtained in a key study carried out according to ASTM D93 (Standard Test Methods for Flash Point by Pensky-Martens Closed Cup Tester). No deviation from the test procedure was reported.
