None of the aquatic studies undertaken for this substance resulted in a classification under the DSD. The aquatic classification assigned is the result of chlorobenzene, an initial reactant, being present in the final substance. Chlorobenzene has a classification of N, R51/53, and is present in the final substance at < 3.5%. According to Directive 1999/45/EC, concerning CLP of dangerous preparations, at this concentration it should be classified, R52/53; Harmful to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.

However, under the GHS, the Algal Inhibition Test with a result of EC50 >97.2 mg/l, Chlorendic anhydride is classified as Aquatic Chronic 3, H413: May cause long lasting harmful effects to aquatic life.
