In a guinea pig maximization test (CIT, 1994) according to OECD TG 406 a test group of 20 animals received 0.1% 2-mercaptoethanol in vehicle (physiological saline) and Freund's adjuvant for intradermal induction, followed by percutaneous induction with 10% 2-mercaptoethanol in vehicle under occlusive dressing for 48 hours. For challenge, 0.5 ml of a 25% solution in vehicle (max . non-irritant concentration, determined in the pretest) was applied to the intact skin for 24 hours (occlusive). The challenge resulted in a sensitisation response in 8 treated animals (40%).
