Details on study design:
Work-related asthma cases were identified using physician reports and hospital discharge data, as part of four state-based surveillance systems. Structured interviews were used to confirm cases and identify occupations and exposures associated with work-related asthma.

Results and discussion

Results:
Health care workers (N=305) accounted for 16% of the 1,879 confirmed work-related cases, but only 8% of the states´ workforce.
The number and percentage of work-related asthma cases among health care workers for glutaraldehyde was 27 cases, 9% respectively.
