Mean diameters (distribution type: number) are for the same sample: D90 = 0.90 μm ± 8 % (Urel), D50 = 0.35 μm ± 4 % (Urel), D10 = 0.21μm ± 14% (Urel).

Executive summary:

A guideline study according to ISO 13320:2009 (Particle size analysis - Laser diffraction methods) was conducted for determination of the particle size distribution of the test substance titanium nitride in water as dispersion medium. The following particle size distribution could be determined by laser diffraction analysis: D90 = 3.37 μm ± 8 % (Urel), D50 = 1.80 μm ± 4 % (Urel), D10= 0.69 μm ± 14 % (Urel).

The following mean volume diameters were determined for titanium nitride:
D90 = 3.37 μm ± 8 % (Urel), D50 = 1.80 μm ± 4 % (Urel), D10= 0.69 μm ± 14 % (Urel).

Additional information

The laser diffraction test using water as dispersion liquid, performed in accordance to ISO 13320:2009 produced the following mean diameters of titanium nitride (distribution type: volume) by applying Fraunhofer approximation:


Thieleke_2021: D90 = 3.37 μm ± 8 % (Urel), D50 = 1.80 μm ± 4 % (Urel), D10= 0.69 μm ± 14 % (Urel).


In another study report similar values were determined:


Behm_2014: D90 = 3.5 μm, D50 = 1.95 μm, D10 = 0.24 μm.
