Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2012-01-19
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. certificate)
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test over 100 mm length
Burning time:
< 1 s
Remarks on result:
other: Burning time (over 100 mm)

Results of preliminary screening test:

Burning time (over 200 mm): < 1 second

Result of full test:

Burning time (over 100 mm): < 1 second

As a positive result was obtained in test 1, no further tests were performed.

Initially the flame took less than 1 second to propagate. No charring, discolouration or melting was observed. A secondary flame was also observed, this flame was coupled with melting and sparking of the substance. For the preliminary test this flame took 202.06 seconds to propagate and for test 1 it took 131.56 seconds. The initial flame was taken as the burning time.

Interpretation of results:
Category 1 (flammable solids) based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
NMMO is concluded to be highly flammable under the conditions of the test.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test item was determined according to EU Method A.10. by applying the burning rate test over 200 mm. The burning time over 200 mm was < 1 second. Therefore, the test item is a flammable solid (Category 1).

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2012-01-24 to 2012-01-26
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. certificate)
Key result
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed

Test results - Initial tests:

No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the tests.

Test results - Final test:

No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the tests. The sample does not generate flammable gases in contact with water.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the tests. The sample does not generate flammable gases in contact with water.
Executive summary:

The behavior of the test item in contact with water was determined according to EU Method A.12. No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the tests. The sample does not generate flammable gases in contact with water.

Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2012-01-24
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
EU Method A.13 (Pyrophoric Properties of Solids and Liquids)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. certificate)
Key result
Test procedure:
ignition time on contact with air
Remarks on result:
no ignition on contact with air (not further specified)

No ignitions were observed during the six tests. The sample is therefore 'Not a pyrophoric solid'.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
No ignitions were observed during the six tests. The sample is therefore 'Not a pyrophoric solid'.
Executive summary:

Pyrophoric properties of the test item were determined according to EU Method A.13. No ignitions were observed during the six tests. The sample is therefore 'Not a pyrophoric solid'.

Description of key information

NMMO is concluded to be highly flammable when ignited, based on the results of the EC A.10 test conducted under GLP; furthermore, NMMO is concluded not to be pyrophoric, nor flammable in contact with water following GLP studies in accordance with EC test methods A.12 and A.13 (Younis, 2012).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
flammable

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

NMMO was determined to be highly flammable in the EC A.10 test. From the EC A.12 and A.13 tests it is concluded that NMMO is not be pyrophoric, nor flammable in contact with water.

CLP: NMMO should be classified as a category 1 flammable solid with hazard statement H228: Flammable solid. This is a conservative approach as only EC A.10 test results are available.
