Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2012-01-19
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
ring method
Key result
Surface tension:
68.9 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
1 g/L
Remarks on result:
other: The surface tension result is corrected for water calibration and for ring dimensions (Harkins-Jordan). Solution age was 10 minutes.

Calibration:

The measured value of the surface tension of water: 69.0 mN/m

EC standard reading for surface tension of water: 72.75 mN/m

Calibration factor is: 72.75/69.0 = 1.054

The calibration factor is determined by measuring the surface tension of water and comparing the value obtained in literature. The corrected value is taken from a table compiled on the basis of the Harkin-Jordan correction.

The duplicate runs provided following values:

Test No 1: 68.2 mN/m

Test No 2: 69.5 mN/m

Conclusions:
The surface tension of the substance was determined to be 68.9 mN/m at a test concentration of 1 g/L and at 20 °C. The substance is concluded not to have surface active properties.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of the test item was determined according to EU Method A.5. by applying the ring method. The surface tension of the substance was determined to be 68.9 mN/m at a test concentration of 1 g/L and at 20 °C. The substance is concluded not to have surface active properties.

Description of key information

The surface tension of NMMO was determined in a GLP study according to test method EC A.5, to be 68.9 mN/m at a test concentration of 1 g/L and at 20 °C, following the ring method (Younis, 2012).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
68.9
in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
