Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
melting point/freezing point
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2005
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: GLP not known information from published handbook data limitations in design and/or reporting but otherwse adequate for assessment
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The use of secondary sources of data is acceptable when they are based on a critical evaluation of peer-reviewed data and a consequent selection of a reliable and representative value for the property under investigation. The NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards is intended as a source of general industrial hygiene information for workers, employers, and occupational health professionals. The Pocket Guide presents key information and data from the US Department of Health and Human Services and as such is a reliable governmental source of information.

Conclusions:
The melting point of DCPD is 90 degrees F (32.2°C).
Executive summary:

No information on the primary source of this data or the methods used is available. However, this information is taken from a reliable government source and is therefore considered to be suitable for use as a key study.

Description of key information

The melting point of high purity DCPD is 32.2°C. The melting point of commercial DCPD is <20°C, with melting points of <0°C at <85% purity, rising to 10°C at >90% purity and >30°C at 100% purity.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
32.2 °C

Additional information

The Pocket Guide presents key information and data from the US Department of Health and Human Services and as such is a reliable governmental source of information and is considered a suitable key study source for this endpoint (NIOSH 2005). This is supported by a melting/ freezing point of between 32 and 34°C from WHO ICSC (2005). No information on the primary source of the data or the methods used is available. However, this information is taken from a reliable peer reviewed database and so can be considered reliable and suitable for use.

Information on the melting/ freezing points of commercial DCPD has been taken from company specific pro-forma. For the data from DOW (2016), there is no information on the GLP status or the methods used. The melting point of commercial (94%) DCPD from proprietary data from Shell (2016) was non-GLP but conducted according to guideline ASTM D1493. The results are considered suitable for use as supporting studies for this endpoint as they are taken from company specific datasheets.
