Description of key information

Distilled Tall Oil is not explosive based on experience on use and handling and structural examination of the constituents of the substance.

The assessment of explosive properties was conducted using non-experimental methodology. The potential explosive properties of a substance can be determined with acceptable reliability directly from the chemical structure (ECHA 2008). If the substance does not contain any groups associated with explosivity then a negative result is likely to be obtained. Chemical structures for the constituents of DTO were examined.

 

Constituents of DTO are not expected to present any hazard associated with explosive properties based on experience in use and handling. This statement is supported by the lack of functional groups of concern in the constituents of DTO and an oxygen balance of –289 for oleic acid and –286 for linoleic acid, the two main fatty acid constituents, and –281 for abietic acid, a typical resin acid structure in DTO.

 

The oxygen balance of major constituents of DTO was determined with the mathematical equation below:

CxHyOz + [x + (y/4)-(z/2)]. O2 → x CO2 + (y/2) H2O

 

Using the formula: OB = -1600 [2x +(y/2) -z] / molecular weight.

 

Where:

x = Number of carbon atoms

y = Number of hydrogen atoms

z = Number of oxygen atoms

(The number of nitrogen and other atoms present is neglected.)

 

Based on lack of functional group of concern in the constituents of DTO based on structural examination and experience in use and handling, it can be predicted that testing for explosive properties will be negative; therefore, testing is not conducted for this group of substance.
