Description of key information

The chemical safety assessment according to Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 does not indicate the need to investigate further the long-term toxicity to fish.

According to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX, Column 2, 9.1.6, long-term toxicity testing shall be proposed by the registrant if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms.

According to the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7b: Endpoint specific guidance, R.7.8.5.3 (ECHA, 2017), long-term testing with fish should only be conducted if it represents the most sensitive taxonomic group. The results indicate no higher sensitivity of fish compared to algae. In the available studies on the toxicity of triafamone (CAS 874195-61-6), algae were the most sensitive organism group resulting in the highest possible chronic classification Aquatic Chronic 1.

In addition, due to a low Kow of 1.5 (pH 4 and pH 7), the substance is not expected to bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms.

Furthermore, triafamone (CAS 874195-61-6) is used as herbicide. Thus, this substance has a specific impact on algae (plants) and not on aquatic fish and invertebrates. Therefore, algae (plants) are the most sensitive organism group.

Overall, since fish is not the most sensitive organism, the substance is not expected to bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms and as the substance has no specific impact on fish, no further long-term test with fish is proposed for triafamone (CAS 874195-61-6).
