In accordance with Column 2 of Annex VIII of the REACH regulation a study on the ready biodegradability does not need to be conducted if the substance is inorganic.

In contact with water ammonium sulphate, potassium sulfate and sodium sulphate readily dissolve and ionise forming ammonium, sodium, potassium, and sulphate ions. The ions are inorganic and therefore biodegradation testing is not applicable.

For the ammonium ion nitrification is an important degradation process in the environment. Nitrifying bacteria are ubiquitous in soil, freshwater, and marine environments.
