Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

By analogy with sodium perchlorate, neutralised solution of perchloric acid has a 3h EC50 > 820 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
820 mg/L

Additional information

No data on perchloric acid is available for this endpoint. However, a reliable unpublished key study is available for sodium perchlorate (Tiebaud H., 1997), which is used in a read-across approach (See the endpoint study summary "Aquatic toxicity" for the read-across justification). The results are recalculated in perchloric acid to be applicable for the derivation of the PNEC of perchloric acid.

In this key study, the respiration inhibition of activated sludge further to sodium perchlorate exposure has been determined according to ISO norm 8192. This method provides indication about inhibition, stimulation effects of sodium perchlorate on micro-organisms exposed up to 3 hours.

The highest concentration tested of 1 g/L of sodium perchlorate (corresponding to 820 mg/L of HClO4) did not inhibit sludge’s respiration after 30 minutes of exposure. This concentration presented an inhibition effect of 25% after 3 h of exposure. Therefore, at 1 g/L sodium perchlorate is very slightly toxic to activated sludges. EC50 is > 1 g/L of sodium perchlorate (corresponding to 820 mg/L of HClO4).
