General Information

Name:
m-phenylenebis(methylamine)
Implementation:
EU
Type of classification:
self-classification
Remarks:

Regulation 1272/2008 states that, if data are available to indicate that the mechanism of inhalation toxicity is corrosivity, the substance shall also be labelled as EUH071. Expert opinion indicates that the results presented in Section 7.2.2  corroborate corrosivity as the mechanism of inhalation toxicity for this substance and, in view of that opinion, EUH071 is applied.

The UN Transport test described in Part III, sub-section 37.4 has not been conducted as specified due to worldwide shortage of specific 2mm metal plates. However, the test method was negative for pure aluminium and will be performed on steel as soon as possible to confirm existing use information. Available data indicates that an existing storage tank made of carbon steel (JIS SS400 (ex SS41)) equivalent to ASTM A283-Gr.D has not suffered major corrosion over a use period of 25 years. The latest annual inspection (July 2009) indicated that areas of corrosion no more than 0.5–1.0 mm in depth were present on the bottom plate but no evidence of corrosion was found on the sides of the tank. The calculated corrosion rate is calculated as 0.45 mm/year at 55 degrees Centigrade.
