Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

vapour pressure
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the melting point is above 300°C
Justification for type of information:
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the vapour pressure study does not need to be conducted as the substance has a melting point above 300°C (please refer to section 4.2).

Description of key information

Aluminium sulphate has negligible vapour pressure.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Vapour pressure:
0.001 Pa
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

No experimental study is deemed necessary: based on the properties of the substance (solid with mp > 300°C) the vapour pressure is expected to be very low, and likely below the measurable range (10E-10 Pa).

However, a key value is required for purpose of CSA. As no realistic value can be provided, an arbitrary value of 0.001 Pa is proposed, in order to lie below the lower threshold of 0.01 Pa used by the risk assessment model.

Additionally, for purpose of risk assessment, an estimation of the VP at 100°C is also needed. The present substance has a high melting point. Published literature data (HSDB / CRC handbook 81st ed.) is available for the analogue Aluminium chloride, which has a lower molecular weight, allowing to interpolate a VP of ca 127 Pa at 100°C. Therefore it seems reasonable to use the volatility band of < 500 Pa for the Tier 1 assessment.
