Description of key information

The EC10 for growth for L. minor was 2.175 mg/L as Total Al.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Data on Lemna minor are provided in two studies, one by Call et al. (1984) on aluminium chloride (7784 -13-6) and a second by Stubblefield (2012g).

In the study by Call et al. 96h exposure of L. minor resulted in no significant effects up to a concentration of 45.7 mg/L Total aluminium (corresponding to <LOQ of 0.3 mg/L dissolved alumium) based on frond number at pHs of 7.6 and 8.2.

In the second study where L. minor were exposed to aluminium nitrate over a period of 7 days in which total, dissolved and monomeric aluminium were measured throughout the test. A NOEC of 2.76 mg/L total Al was determined (LOEC = 5.31 mg/L) based on the most sensitive endpoint Total dry weight. The EC10 for this endpoint was 2.175 mg/L as Total Al. Dissolved aluminium values were less than the LOD (15.1 µg/L) throughout the study at all concentrations except for two cases where they were 25.8 µg/L and therefore could not be used to determine effect concentrations.
