Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

As per ECHA UVBC guidance, representative constituents were those with concentration greater or equal to 10% (v/v) and/or are CMRs.

Appearance/physical state/ colour data was available for 1,3 -butadiene and 4 streams of C4 hydrocarbons. The streams within the category are all liquefied gaseous organic petroleum products. They are colourless to light amber in appearance and are odourless or have a sweetish smell.

No physchem property data were available for any of the streams within this Category. However, data were read across from the main hydrocarbon C4 substances in this Category. The representative constituents of the category studied and used as supporting read-across are But-1-en-3-yne (CAS 689-97-4), But-1-ene (CAS 106-98-9), But-2-ene, cis- (CAS 590-18-1), But-2-ene, trans- (CAS 624-64-6), Buta-1,2-diene (CAS 590-19-2), Buta-1,3-diene (CAS 106-99-0), Butane (CAS 106-97-8), Prop-1-ene, 2-methyl- (CAS 115-11-7), and Propane, 2-methyl- (CAS 75-28-5).

The physchem property data presented in the dossier are compilation of QSAR data and data from peer review handbooks. Different models of Epi Suite have been used as key QSARs. No information on the test methods used is available in the handbooks; however, as the information is taken from peer reviewed handbooks and it can be considered reliable and suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint.

The melting points of the representative constituents of this Category range from -185 to -95.51 °C.

The boiling points of the representative constituents of this Category range from -11.73 to 10.9 °C.

The density of the representative constituents of this Category at 20-25°C range from 0.573 - 0.616 g/cm3.

The vapour pressures of the representative constituents of this Category range from 168 kPa to 1750 kPa.

The partition coefficients of the representative constituents of this Category range from 1.40 to 2.89.

The water solubility of the representative constituents of this Category at 25-30°C range from 53.5 to 2,837.9 mg/L.

The autoflammability of the representative constituents of this Category range from 324 to 465°C.

The lower and upper explosion limits of the representative constituents of this Category range from 1.6 to 12 %. All category members are classified as Flammable gas category 1.

As the streams within this Category are gases, the following studies do not need to be conducted (the studies scientifically not necessary/ technically not feasible): Surface tension, Particle size distribution (Granulometry), Flash point, Explosiveness, Oxidising properties, Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products, Dissociation constant and Viscosity.
