Description of key information
In a flammability (solid) pretest, it was impossible to ignite the test item durably. Thus, the main test is not required and the test item is considered to be non flammable. The test item was not classified as flammable, flammable in contact with water or pyrophoric.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- non flammable
Additional information
Flammability (GLP-Report 2012 -0078 -DGS)
The Flammability of the test item 4-Hydroxy TEMPO was determined according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008, method A.10, Flammability (Solids). The test item was formed to an unbroken powder strip of 250 mm in length on a ceran plate. Ignition of the solid powder train was attempted (for a maximum of 2 minutes) with the flame of a teclu-burner. The test item melted and showed a temporary inflammation. The vapours only ignited in the vicinity of the ignition source. After removing the source of ignition, the flame extinguished immediately. There was no enduring inflammation attainable within two minutes of heating the pile with the gas burner. Furthermore no propagation of flames or smouldering was observed within the testing period of four minutes. As it was impossible to ignite the test item durably, the main test was not required. Thus, the test item is considered to be non flammable.
Flammability in contact with water
In accordance with column 2 Annex VII Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the test on flammability in contact with water does not need to be conducted as the substance shows no reaction with water. As the substance is soluble in water without reaction occurring it is not conceivable that the substance is flammable on contact with water.
Pyrophoric abilities
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the test on pyrophoric abilities does not need to be conducted as the substance in not flammable and shows no reaction with the air. The substance is flaked, stored and handled in aerobic conditions, therefore from experience the substance cannot be considered pyrophoric.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on the study results, the molecular structure and experience in handling and use, the substance was not classified and labelled as flammable, flammable in contact with water or pyrophoric according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) or Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
