Description of key information

Hydrolysis of 1,2-dichloropropane in water (pH 6.9) is slow, with a half-life of 283 months at 25 C.  The reaction is faster in seawater (pH 8.3), with a half-life of 60 months at 25 C.

The hydrolysis of 1,2-dichloropropane has been measured experimentally by Milano et al. Hydrolysis of 1,2-dichloropropane in water (pH 6.9) is slow, with a half-life of 283 months at 25 C. The corresponding neutral hydrolysis rate constant at 25 C is 3.35 x 10e-6 hr-1. Hydrolysis products detected in the reactions included 1-chloro-2-propanol and hydrochloric acid. The experimentally determined half-life for hydrolysis in water is in good agreement with values reported in several handbooks. The reaction is faster in seawater (pH 8.3), with a half-life of 60 months at 25 C.
