In the LLNA DETA was applied to the ears of mice at concentrations up to 10%. Exposure to DETA provoked stimulation indices of 3.3 and 3.5 at 5% and 10%, respectively. The EC 3 was calculated at 3.9%. All three guinea pig maximization tests confirm that DETA is a potential sensitizer.

Cytokine fingerprinting (interferon gamma, interleukin 4 and interleukin 10) was used for the identification of chemicals that had the potential to cause allergic sensitization of the respiratory tract. Cytokine fingerprinting, a method which has been shown to distinguish between contact and respiratory chemical allergens as a function of LNC cytokine production patterns induced in mice by topical administration of the test chemical. Although DETA was positive in the local lymph node assay, it failed to provoke significant cytokine production as judged by cytokine fingerprinting. Although this produces evidence for the lack of respiratory sensitization of DETA is not conclusive.
Justification for classification or non-classification
DETA is a sensitizing agent and can be classified as a category 1B skin sensitizer.
DETA is not classifiable as a respiratory sensitizer.
