Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

General: Remove contaminated clothing.  First-aid measures must be taken, if during the manufacture or use of silver dust or fumes are generated, which could be inhaled or swallowed.

If inhaled: Remove to or supply fresh air.  If breathing is difficult, provide oxygen.  If no breathing, provide artificial respiration. Consult doctor in order to obtain medical attention in case of complaints.

Following skin contact: Substance does not irritate the skin.  In case of contact, remove contaminated clothing and shoes, and flush skin with plenty of water.

Following eye contact: Substance does not cause damage to eyes.  In case of contact, remove contaminated clothing, rinse with water, keeping eyelids for several minutes.

If swallowed: Substance does not cause intoxication.  Do not induce vomitting unless directed to do so by medical personnel.  If symptoms persist, consult a doctor to obtain medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Adapt environmental protection measures to fight fire.

If liquid silver, apply dry sand.

Protective equipment: No special measures required.  Do not inhale gases which may occur after explosion or combustion.

Accidental release measures

Related safety precautions: Not required.

Measures for environmental protection: If powder, avoid dispersal of spilled material and runoff and contact with waterways, drains and sewers.

Measures for cleaning / collecting: Collect mechanically and place in an appropriate container.  Avoid creating dusty conditions and prevent wind dispersal.

Additional information: No dangerous substances are released.

Handling and storage

Handling:

Avoid formation of dust: If thermic treatment or manufacture with cuppelation, foresee suction or exhaust systems on processors.  Do not add any wet/damp metal during liquefaction of a metal.

Information about fire and explosion: No special measures required.

Requirements to be met by storage facilities, storerooms, containers for storage: No special requirements.

Requirements on storage conditions: Store metal to be melted in dry form in tightly closed container. Keep containers in cool, well-ventilated areas.

Storage class: 13.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Additional information about design of technical systems: Ingredients with limit values that require monitoring at the workplace: Ingot of silver / silver granules / powder (EH40-WEL (UK, 1/2005) or VME: 0.1 mg / m³ TWA 8 h); MAK: 0,01 mg/m³; AGW: 0,1 E mg/m³ (8(II); DFG, EU)

General protective and hygienic measures: Apply the usual precautionary measures for handling chemicals; use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to keep airborne levels below recommended exposure limits.  If operations generate dust, fume or mist, use ventilation to keep exposure to airborne contaminants below the exposure limit.

Respiratory protection: A properly fitted, particulate filter respirator complying with an approved standard is required if a risk assessment indicates this is necessary (e.g.: for a work / heat treatment with insufficient ventilation). Filter recommended for short term use: Filter P2

Eye protection: Safety eyewear such as goggles complying with an approved standard should be used when a risk assessment indicates this is necessary to avoid exposure to liquid splashes, mists or dusts (e.g.: during the use of liquid silver form or during the appearance of dust).

Hands and body protection: Flame-retardant, thermic and chemical resistant protective clothing (such as impervious gloves or gauntlets complying with an approved standard) should be worn if a risk assessment indicates this is necessary (e.g.: during use of silver in liquid form).

Stability and reactivity

Stability: the substance is stable, no degradation is known.

Thermal decomposition / conditions to be avoided: No decomposition if used as directed.

Materials to Avoid: Acetylene - Dangerous reactions may form with acetylene in an explosive silveracetylide.

Hazardous decomposition products: No dangerous decomposition products known.

Disposal considerations

Product can be reused after treatment.  Return material to the refinery for metal recovery.

Uncleaned packaging: Disposal according to official regulations.
