Description of key information

The 14-day NOEC and LC50 of the test material for mortality, body weight and behavioural activity of the earthworm Eisenia foetida was determined to be 100 and 1000 mg/kg soil dry weight, respectively

Additional information

A study was performed to investigate the effects of the test material on the mortality, body weight and behavioural activity of adult Eisenia foetida. The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 107 and EU Method C.8.

Eisenia foetida (clitellate adults) were exposed to concentrations of test substance evenly incorporated into an artificial soil for 14 days at 20 ± 2°C. The concentrations were 0, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 mg/kg soil dry weight in the initial study and 0, 100 and 1000 mg/kg soil dry weight in the definitive study. All concentrations were corrected for purity, i.e. calculated for 100% active ingredient. Four replicates each for the test treatments for the control with 10 worms each were used in the study. Earthworms were assessed for mortality and any abnormal behavioural effects after 14 days in the initial test and after 7 and 14 days in the definitive test. Each batch of ten earthworms was weighed at, the beginning and end of each test to determine any change in bodyweight

The 14-day LC50 value was greater than 1000 mg/kg soil which was the highest dose tested.

There were no mortalities or behavioural effects at 1000 mg/kg, but there was a significant reduction in body weight compared to the control and the majority of earthworms (75%) showed bands of blue coloration. At 100 mg/kg, there were no abnormalities in behaviour or external condition in any surviving earthworms, nor were there any significant effects on body weight or mortality. Thus, the No Observed Effect Concentration was at least 100 mg/kg soil.

The 14-day LC50 value for chloroacetamide, tested as a toxic standard, was 38 mg/kg.
