Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The test substance shows 8 % inhibition of respiration and 6 % inhibition of nitrification (formation NO2 + NO3 at 4 h) of at a test concentration of 112 mg/L. No inhibition of respiration at 56 and 32 mg/L. The test substance showed no significant inhibition up to and including the maximum concentration of test substance tested (4.2 % w/w on dry sludge solids) in anaerobic sludge digestion. The results of the colorimetric analysis show a mean decolourisation in the anaerobic digestion process of 93 %.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A study was conducted to assess the potential adverse effects on aerobic and anaerobic sewage treatment processes. A number of different procedures were used for this work with the overall objectives of assessing potential adverse effects on aerobic and anaerobic sewage treatment processes and the likely degree of bioelimination of test substance in anaerobic processes.

Following were the tests with the concentrations used in the study.

Effect on respiration rate of activated sludge (Study V205/E): 112, 56, 32 mg/L test substance

Effect on the nitrifying ability of activated sludge (Study V205/D): Control, 4.2, 2.1, 1.0 % on dry solids

Effects anaerobic sludge digestion (Study V205/F): Control, 4.2, 2.1, 1.0 % on dry solids

Decolourisation-Anaerobic sludge digestion: Control, 4.2, 2.1, 1.0 % on dry solids

Aerobic sewage treatment

(a) Test substance at a test level of 100 mg/L caused an 8 % inhibition of the respiration rate of an activated sludge as determined by the ETAD Method 103. This inhibition is not considered to be significant and it is unlikely that test substance will affect aerobic sewage treatment.

(b) Test substance at a test level of 100 mg/L inhibited the nitrifying ability of activated sludge by 6 % when measured by the standard Department of the Environment (UK) Method. This is not considered significant and it is unlikely that test substance will affect nitrification during sewage treatment.

Anaerobic sewage treatment

A batch anaerobic digestion experiment was carried out at levels of test substance of up to 4.2 % w/w total solids. No significant inhibition of gas production was observed and it is considered unlikely that test substance will interfere with the sludge digestion process.

Colorimetric analysis of the supernatant at the end of the digestion experiment showed a mean colour removal of 93 %.
