A complex residuum from the vacuum distillation of the residuum from atmospheric distillation of crude oil. It consists of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly greater than C34 and boiling above approximately 495°C (923°F).
In tests conducted according to UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test
N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids), bitumen samples were
found to be not flammable.
The samples melted to a black liquid, in some cases a few sparks were
seen, but no propagation was observed in any sample.
The bitumen samples did not propagate burning over 200mm.
Based on the combustion propagation of less than 200 mm in 4 minutes,
classification of bitumen as flammable is not warranted in accordance
with the EU CLP Regulation (EC No. 1272/2008).
