A complex residuum from the vacuum distillation of the residuum from atmospheric distillation of crude oil. It consists of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly greater than C34 and boiling above approximately 495°C (923°F).
Key study data are available for each physicochemical endpoint for substances in the Bitumen category of substances. Substances in this category are solid or semi-solid (CONCAWE, 1992a) at ambient temperature (20°C) and pressure (101.3 kPa). Since bitumen gradually softens with increasing temperature, softening points are measured instead of melting point values. Softening points for bitumens are in the range 30 -128°C (CONCAWE, 1992a; Shell, 2003; CONCAWE 2010). Bitumens in general have boiling points >320°C; with boiling points for hard bitumen usually > 500°C (CONCAWE, 2010a). The relative density for bitumen ranges from 0.925 to 1.107 at 15°C (CONCAWE, 2010a) while vapour pressure is expected to be extremely low (<<0.1 kPa) at ambient temperature (CONCAWE, 1992a).
Flash points for various bitumen grades are >180°C (CONCAWE, 2010a; Shell, 2003) while self-ignition temperature/auto inflammability values are >400°C (TOTAL 1979; Shell, 2003). Viscosity values range from:4.5 to 10000 Pa.s at 60°C; 1000 to 16000 mm2/s at 60°C according to EN 12595, 1189 to 8650 mPa.s at 100°C, 135 to 4000 mm2/s at 135°C(CONCAWE, 2010a; CONCAWE, 1992a).
Based on information available on the properties of the substances that comprise the bitumen category of chemicals, specific data are not presented for the following endpoints: partition co-efficient, water solubility, granulometry, surface tension, stability in organic solvents, explosiveness, oxidising properties and dissociation constant. Appropriate waiving statements are provided to indicate why data for these REACH endpoints are not applicable. The physico-chemical data presented are considered representative for the substances included in the Bitumen category.
