Description of key information

Water Solubility (tetramethyl orthosilicate): not relevant
Water Solubility (silicic acid): very soluble, 1E+06 mg/l (QSAR)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The requirement to test the substance for water solubility is waived on the basis that it hydrolyses very rapidly to silicic acid and methanol. However, the water solubility of the substance and its hydrolysis product have been predicted to be 8.8E+05 mg/l and 1.0E+06 mg/l (very soluble) at 20°C respectively. In reality, however, the water solubility will be limited by the strong tendency of Si(OH)4 to undergo condensation reactions of the type Si-OH → Si-O-Si; this can lead to formation of a highly cross-linked network (gel).

Methanol has a measured water solubility of 1E+06 mg/l at 20°C (OECD 2004a)
